Mission Statement:
To help prepare our youth to become literate readers, self-sufficient individuals armed with the skills they need to succeed in our global economy. To be ready to assume the role of informed and productive citizens and have the ability to make good voting decisions based on critical thinking skills, the ability to interpret facts from fiction, see the difference between propaganda, lies and other forms of fabrication in news, interpret graphs, political cartoons and improve their writing skills. To promote reading as a lifelong interest and see that it is the basis for all other knowledge and technology.
History/Goals/Objectives:
For over 18 years we have reached out to over a million students and educators throughout the Bay Area. Every year we survey our teachers and leaders to see what curriculm they would like to have created. All our special units meet the California State Content Standards and use authentic material, unlike textbooks that are 7 years out-of date the minute they get into the classroom. Research proves that using our creative units on health, diversity, the arts, writing and much more students standaized test scores improved from 10 to 30%! Our objective is to keep youth reading and learning related skills all summer long to maintain their retention. Typically students come back to the classroom after the LONG summer vacation and have to relearn and review many skills. Children's Hospital participates in our units, English Lanaguage Learners, Home Schools, Boys & Girls Clubs, Scouts etc. We put the FUN and Timeliness back into reading. Self-esteem rises because even though a child might be reading on a 4th grade level and actually be in 8th grade, no peer will make fun of 'him' for using a newspaper.
