Bay Area Community Resources (BACR)

(Program Offered in Schools)

Program Name: After-School Academic Support and Enrichment Program

Program Description: The after-school program at each school provides structured academic support and enrichment activities, applying best practices in youth development.     The academic support component provides students with personalized support for their academic needs and interests in a safe and nurturing environment staffed by trained adults. The program includes daily homework centers-with one-on-one and small group tutoring in basic skill areas-and KidzLit and KidzMath workshops, which use culturally relevant stories to promote literacy, mathematics, and pro-social skills. With the participation of school teachers, AmeriCorps Members, the Site Coordinator, and staff from partnering service providers, all academic support activities maintain adult-to-student ratios usually at 1:10 or below and not to exceed 1:15.    The enrichment and recreation component provides students with a number of opportunities for exploration and development of skills and interests, self expression, and personal growth. These activities include several arts activities (dance, theater, music, and visual arts) and multiple athletic programs. Athletic activities are linked to academic skills through building in time for activities such as literacy development.     While the specific menu of academic support and enrichment/recreation activities vary from school to address their individual needs, each school adheres to common program design elements, including the following:     --Targets disadvantaged students who are underperforming academically;    --Emphasizes daily academic support and enrichment activities that are closely linked to and complements the school-day, through referrals of students for specific types of academic support and enrichment to meet identified needs;    --Provides activities that are age-appropriate and cross-age;    --Includes occasional weekend/evening activities to promote parental involvement and community building;    --Begins recruitment in May of the prior school year and provides program services September through early June;    --Promotes strong bonding between staff and children, so children feel a sense of expectation and encouragement;     --Draws from broad, collaborative support from a number of community-based providers experienced in delivering quality, engaging, results-oriented after-school programming to Oakland children; and    --Has clear outcome objectives and a well-defined evaluation plan.    In preparing for the implementation of Proposition 49, BACR has the capacity to serve as lead agency for additional after-school programs. The overall program design for new  programs will incorporate structural and academic support/enrichment components similar to BACR's current programs and draw from partnerships with existing service providers (subcontractors) and OCASA AmeriCorps.
