(Programs Offered in the Community)
Program Name: ArtGate; Community Performances
Program Description: Our ArtGate Artist-in-Residence program provides arts education to over 1,800 underserved youth at 20 Oakland public schools, with programs in Drama, Poetry/Spoken Word, Visual Art, Photography, Comic Book Art, Traditional Mexican Art, Music, and African and Hip-Hop Dance. Additional ArtGate programs include the Summer Youth Theatre, a five-week program open to all Oakland youth. Our Performing Internships for our advanced drama students allow youth performers to participate in professional productions. The Arts Leadership Group bring together Oakland youth to perform community service arts projects. Our Arts Administration internships provide job skills training to interns working in our office. All of these programs provide paid internships to participants. Our Community Performances program brings interactive live theatre productions to schools, community centers, libraries, and other community spaces. It includes five 'Multicultural Folk Tale' productions that use music, drama, dance, and audience participation to introduce stories from around the world to audiences of all ages. Our new production, 'Being Something,' for middle school through adult age audiences, uses a similar format to tell contemporary stories of life in Oakland.
