The Crucible
(Programs Offered in the Community)
Program Name: The Crucible Youth Program
Program Description: YOUTH PROGRAM MISSION The Crucible Youth Program exposes youth of diverse backgrounds to the fine and industrial arts. Through intensive and engaging programs such as classes, fieldtrips, and workshops, this program explores multidisciplinary subject areas. The Crucible Youth Program is committed to community service within our schools and neighborhoods. We are dedicated to promoting healthy youth development, strengthening youth competencies in leadership, community service and skill building. We provide safe and imaginative fine and industrial art experiences. OUR GOALS The goals of The Crucible's Youth and Community Outreach Program are to: Engage youth in relevant, intensive and engaging classes, workshops, field trips, community service projects and special events. Create significant relationships with key stakeholders: youth, parents, schools, and community based organizations. Inspire a new generation of fine and industrial artists to enrich the community. Classes SPRING BREAK This spring we offer four exciting days of fun and learning in blacksmithing and jewelry making. This is an excellent introduction for young, creative artists to explore Crucible youth classes! SUMMER CAMPS From jewelry to welding to building your own rocket car, two extraordinary camps await you this summer! During Fire Arts Festival, July 11-12, 2006, we'll be offering a wide variety of two-day 'tasters' to youth ages 5-18 and in August 14-18, 2006, we'll be offering more intensive five-day classes. AFTERSCHOOL Our new after school classes are an exciting alternative to traditional after school programs. Youth explore and learn in exciting weeklong classes. Cut loose at the end of the school day with a welded sculpture class! WEEKENDS Our convenient and popular weekend classes are specially designed for youth and parents with busy schedules. They provide students the opportunity to immerse themselves in unique courses with expert instructors. Youth Workshops The Crucible has hosted several youth workshops with local schools and organizations. Working in collaboration with local educational programs, these projects have taught youth skills to create a specific project under the instruction of Crucible faculty. Past collaborations include Girls Inc., Lick Wilmerding School, Athenian School, Marin Community Day School and Cole Middle School. Workshops are project-based opportunities for students to participate in a group project or create individual projects. Workshops have been designed primarily to facilitate team building opportunities as well as individual exploration of the arts. If you are interested in having The Crucible host a workshop, please contact kristy@thecrucible.org. Community Collaborations The Crucible has successfully partnered with local Oakland and Alameda County schools and youth groups on public art projects. Past projects include the Cesar E. Chavez Memorial Sculpture funded by the Alameda County Office of Education, and the creation of a 'Veggie Cart' now being used by Oakland's City Slicker Farms. We also hosted an after school program from MacClymonds High School to forge stone carving tools. The Crucible has made a commitment to offer four community service projects annually. These projects are designed as collaborative activities that bring together different members of our West Oakland community. If you are interested in having The Crucible host a workshop or participate in collaboration with your organization, please contact kristy@thecrucible.org. Youth Field Trip Program Our school and community field trip program is a dynamic part of our organization. Through this program, we provide youth with demonstrations by artists and industry experts. These field trips support leaning in areas such as mathematics, science, art, and world culture. Participants learn about the processes, tools, materials and applications of industrial arts and are inspired to make connections between arts and science. The Crucible staff works closely with educators to create a meaningful and exciting educational experience. To schedule a field trip, please contact kristy@thecrucible.org. ERV: Educational Response Vehicle ERV, The Crucible's Educational Response Vehicle, is a restored 1960 International fire truck with a full metal shop on board. Demonstrations of glass flame working, welding, torch cutting, casting and blacksmithing take place on the traveling ERV. This mobile educational vehicle allows The Crucible to serve the needs of local schools with interesting and engaging demonstrations. To schedule the ERV, please contact kristy@thecrucible.org.
