Program Name: After-School Garden Program
Program Description: OBUGS currently serves about 150 elementary and middle school students in it after-school program. Each student participates throughout the school year, and a summer camp is offered through the end of July. Participants help maintain the garden through planting, watering, turning the soil, etc. They also harvest vegetables and use them to cook healthful meals. Additionally, we regularly offer art projects and games. The summer camp includes similar activities, with the addition of a weekly fieldtrip to a park, farm, or museum.

Describe Weekend, Evening, Summer Services and Transportation Arrangements (if applicable):
On the weekend, we offer a 'market chefs' program at the Mandela Farmers Market (next to W.Oakland BART). The chefs prepare food for market shoppers. For our summer services see 'summer camp' in the program description section. We provide transportation to 2 of our gardens (the ones that are not connected to a school) via our van. The children are picked up at their school.

Capacity to Deliver Services: Each after-school and summer session is led by a lead teacher and an
assistant teacher. We often have additional support from teens, who work as
assistant teachers and from our head gardener.

We currently offer the
classes at three garden sites. One is connected to Lafayette School. We drive
the children to the other sites. We run 7 after-school programs per week, but
each child attends only once a week.
Contract Fee Schedule: It
costs approximately $150 to run each 2-hour after-school program, serving a
maximum of 25 children. This includes staff, snack, preparation, and other
supplies.
Instructor Cost/hour: $19
for lead, $13 for assist.
