History/Goals/Objectives:

In 1958, a group of local businesswomen responded to the fact that their communtiy laced a supportive center for girls by establishing Girls Incorporated of Alameda County. An affiliate of the national Girls Incorporated, the nation's leading voice for girls, Girls Incorporated of Alameda County (Girls Inc.) has provided programs and real-life options for girls in our community for more than 48 years. From a humble beginning in a small neighborhood house, Girls Inc. has grown into a multi-service agency, delivering life-changing services to approximately 8,500 girls, boys and their families annually.     Girls Inc. focuses on gender-specific issues that empower girls to advocate for themselves and their education, to think of themselves as leaders at a young age, to practice assertiveness and leadership and to protect their rights and the rights of others. Girls Inc. programs promote self-esteem and cultural pride, encourage active pursuit of academic achievement, organize girls as community advocates and provide career opportunities beyond traditional female-specific employment.
