Through adult mentorship GEP is dedicated to providing at-risk youth with the skills to become self-reliant through entrepreneurship training, employment opportunities and access to educational resources.
History/Goals/Objectives:
•We have been in
operation since 1994 in the Bay Area •We have served over 2200 youth since our
inception •The opening of the first youth-run full-service café and catering
company in Oakland in May of 2005 which serves over 50 youth per program year
•The enrollment of over 100 youth in college courses directly linked to our
2003-2005 Corners Café Vocational Training Program, 100% of accepted applicants
enrolled and 95% completed the course. •The opening of a foster youth-run
Oakland-Based Retail Kiosk in Frank Ogawa Plaza in December 2005 •On average
75% of EETP graduates have found employment after the program since program
inception •In March of both 2002 and 2003, EETP students from Freemont High became
statewide SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) champions; in May of 2003, the
same team won the National and International Championships at the SAGE
(Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship) competition in Kansas
City, Missouri. In 2004, the Fremont High School SAGE team placed 2nd in the
State Championships and was featured in Entrepreneur Magazine in 2003 and was
featured on George Lucas’ educational television program Edutopia.
•G.E.P employs 5-10 alumni youth each summer to run summer programs and be
mentors to new youth •25% of alumni youth attend 4-year colleges including
Stanford, UC Berkeley and Chico State, as well as out of state Historically
Black Universities like Spellman and Langston. •In the summer of 2004 and 2005,
EETP alumni ran the youth portion of the very successful City of
Goals and Objectives:
To
improve students’ knowledge of small business operations, their ability to
implement small business principles, their self-esteem and view of their future.
To
increase math and literacy skills and apply them to real-life business
situations.
To
increase specific vocational skills.
