Mission Statement:
The Junior League of Oakland-East Bay, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
History/Goals/Objectives:
For over 65 years, the Junior League of Oakland-East Bay, Inc. has devoted countless hours and raised millions of dollars to meet the needs of the communities we serve in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. The core values and beliefs that guide the motivation and actions of JLOEB include our belief that children should have equal opportunities in life for health, safety, education and training. The primary focus of the JLOEB's efforts is on improving conditions for vulnerable children throughout Oakland and the East Bay. In 2000, our membership voted to focus our efforts on the education of children K-8 who are economically and/or socially disadvantaged. In 2001, JLOEB launched the Super Stars Literacy Program which is designed to intervene early with children in kindergarten through second grades who exhibit significant delays in reading acquisition or reading skills development. Using an integrated school/community-based model, the program provides daily, intensive after school small group reading instruction and individualized tutoring along with enrichment activities in coordination with the classroom curriculum. Currently the program focuses on children scoring in the lower quartile in reading.

Our program specifically focuses on children in grades K-2 who are risk of school failure due to limited literacy skill development.
