Mission Statement:
The mission of MOCHA, a nonprofit agency founded in Oakland, California, in 1988, is to ensure that the arts are a fundamental part of the lives of all children. MOCHA serves children ages 18 months to 18 years and encourages hands-on learning in the arts; advocates for the arts as an essential part of childhood education; and promotes the arts as a critical tool in helping children of all backgrounds develop as healthy, resourceful, and involved citizens.
History/Goals/Objectives:
MOCHA has three program focus areas: School Programs in public schools which reached more than 3,300 students in grades K-12 at 25 East Bay schools last year through classroom artist residencies and afterschool programs; Community Partner Programs which served more than 4,600 youth at public libraries, in public housing, and at community festivals and other public events; and Museum Programs at MOCHA's downtown Oakland gallery and studios, which reached 19,000 students through daily drop-in art programs, school field trips, holiday and summer art camps, and the Little Studio, a specially designed space for children ages 18 months to 5 years. MOCHA has a decade of experience working in afterschool programming. In 2003, MOCHA was awarded the national Coming Up Taller Award from the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, recognizing our Project YIELD at Cole School as an outstanding afterschool community youth arts program.
