History/Goals/Objectives:

History    The Mindful Messages Mentoring Program (MMMP) offers a Health Education, Culture and Life Skills program for urban youth ages 11-18. It has both an Africentric focus and universal appeal for all youth of the Hip Hop generation.       The MMMP was founded by Deborah Day who wrote the curriculum and created the program. She is a poet, publisher, mentor and activist. Since 2002 she has been marketing her curriculum to parents and educators for after school programs and home schooling around the country and has conducted workshops with many youth agencies and schools in the Bay Area.  Most recently she partnered with the Alameda County Medical Center Family Services Collaborative (ACMC) and has provided After School and Summer Program for Oakland youth at two OHA sites in both East and West Oakland.      Goals    The goal is to reconnect youth to their creative inner spirit so that they become more successful in all their endeavors and contribute to their to community and society. The areas of youth development include:      1. Understand we all are Divine Spiritual Beings    2. Increase Cultural and Self-Awareness   3. Increase Self-Esteem   4. Provide Greater Understanding of HIV/AIDS          Awareness and Prevention   5. Increase Understanding of Social      Responsibility   6. Strengthen Decision Making and Life Skills   7. Increase Communication and Language Skills (Reading, Writing, Spelling and Speaking)    Objectives    To use the innovative concepts of Spoken Word and Mindfulness to change 'at risk' behavior.     This program also offers a certificate of completion and homework assistance.
