Mission Statement:
OASES seeks to empower youth who have limited resources, particularly those in the Asian and Pacific Islander communities of Oakland, to maximize their potential through educational services and social support.
History/Goals/Objectives:
Since 1983, OASES has worked to achieve the mission of 'empowering youth who have limited resources, particularly those in the Asian and Pacific Islander communities of Oakland, to maximize their potential through educational services and social support.' OASES was founded by a group of U.C. Berkeley undergraduates to provide a critical safety net for youth in Chinatown. Beginning with a handful of volunteers who grew up in Chinatown, OASES has grown to become a community-based organization that trains the largest volunteer force in any OUSD after school program (400 U.C. Berkeley students) to provide individualized tutoring and mentoring to over 400 youth in grades 1-12 with a tutor to student ratio of 1:1 to 1:4, and provides enrichment & recreation programs, on a daily basis, free of charge. In 1996, OASES provided daily comprehensive academic and enrichment services to Lincoln students under state and federal programs such as 21st Century CLC and Before/After School Learning & Safe Neighborhoods. And, OASES was the Lead Agency for the federal 21st Century CLC from 2000-2003- a collaboration between three OUSD schools (Lincoln, Lakeview, Westlake).
