Mission Statement:
The mission of Oakland Leaf is to manifest creative educational environments for children, youth, families and elders in the city of Oakland. Our programs derive their strength and beauty from the interweaving of four essential strands: social justice, sustainable ecology, youth empowerment and the arts.
History/Goals/Objectives:
Leaf programs include: Oakland Peace Camp, a summer program serving 90 youth annually; ASCEND Sunset Warriors, a comprehensive after-school program serving 200 youth in 2006-2007; Arts Integration, providing arts coaching and instruction for 264 students at ASCEND; UPA Urban Arts, a comprehensive after-school program serving 130 UPA students daily; the Youth Leadership Corps, a year-round training and action program for 16 middle and high school youth; and the All-Oakland Talent Show, an annual youth performance exhibition. Leaf is dedicated to 'community transformation through creative education,' a motto that encompasses our belief that youth have the capacity to change the world and that creative educational opportunities have the potential to inspire reflection, commitment, responsibility, critical thinking, vision, and action. Leaf programs place a premium on values and high expectations for young people, in line with OFCY's 'Long Range Vision.' Leaf's programmatic goal is to cultivate a generation of youth leaders who, through participation in our programs as students, artists, athletes, evaluators and, eventually, educators and community change-makers, will develop the necessary skills and perspectives to take ownership of, and leadership for their community.
