Mission Statement:

The Office of Parks and Recreation is committed and dedicated to offering quality services, activities, and programs open to all Oakland citizens and visitors.    Our goal is to cultivate awareness about the availability, accessibility, and affordability of Parks and Recreation services.    We offer fun activities in a clean, safe, healthy environment that provide opportunities for personal growth and skills development.    We strive to foster community ownership and launch best practice standards to operate and maintain our facilities, playgrounds, and parks to preserve the beauty and legacy of our city.

History/Goals/Objectives:

The City of Oakland-Office of Parks and Recreation (OPR) has proudly served the citizens of Oakland with outstanding recreation and leisure services since 1909. We are proposing to offer school-site recreation programs that are part of a comprehensive afterschool program at either elementary or middle school sites. OPR is able to offer: City-wide Success Sports League (flag football; basketball, softball, and track and field); Tennis; Dance;Theater Arts; Learn to Swim; and Learn to Sail. We are targeting schools that can recruit at least 15 students per grade level (K-2; 3-5; middleschool). By offering flexible options to each school site, OPR is able to complement and coordinate with other afterschool programs at the site with skills-based structured activities. Our goal is to provide successful physical fitness and cultural arts opportunities to youth so that they will learn the fundamentals of fitness, sports, and the arts while developing a life-long enjoyment for the activity. The programs are designed to instill personal development, improve communication and team building skills, build self-esteem, and promote healthy lifestyles. Everybody plays – Everybody wins!
