Mission Statement:
Our mission is to provide a culturally conscious educational program promoting leadership, performing arts education, skill training, academic progress, and life experience opportunities for youngsters in a context that allows them to fully explore their talents and enriches self-esteem. Additionally, we seek to provide professional-level entertainment by children of color for audiences of all ages while representing Oakland youth in a proud and positive manner.
History/Goals/Objectives:
The Prescott Circus Theatre is an exciting and innovative after school performing arts education program for Oakland youth. 4th and 5th graders work closely with resident and specialty artists to develop circus skills such as juggling, acrobatics, improvisation, balancing, unicycling, stilting, hip hop dance, hambone body percussion, and clowning. Students learn creative expression, stage presence, and performance production. They receive additional exposure to the arts by attending related performances and performing in the community. Our participants and parents are surveyed and consistently report benefits such as increased confidence, ability to learn new things, teamwork, leadership, and school success.
