May 2006. OCASA is working to find ways to match the operational funding gap created by the funds available through Prop 49 and the real funds needed to operate a quality program. We are working with the Oakland Fund for Children and Youth to see if special funds could be made available in 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 school years. At the May 17 Planning and Oversight Committee, Edward Hannemann presented this plan for discussion.

March 2006. Building on earlier meetings with City Council members and comments at public meetings, OCASA reached out to its members and others in the field to ask the City Council to finally address and repay funds owed to the Oakland Fund for Children and Youth. A letter to the City Council garnered the support of over 30 non-OCASA members. An op-ed ran in the Oakland Tribune from OCASA Chair Edward Hannemann. We are continuing to push this issue, which will next be addressed at an April City Council Finance Committee meeting.

September 2005. OCASA brought together after school providers in partnership with the Oakland Unified School District’s SUCCESS Office, Oakland Fund for Children and Youth, and Safe Passages, to discuss and move forward the Oakland After-School Initiative.
