(Programs Offered in the Community)
Program Name: Super Stars Literacy Program
Program Description: Super Stars Literacy Program is designed to intervene early with children in kindergarten through second grades who exhibit significant delays in reading acquisition or reading skills development. Using an integrated school/community-based model, the program provides daily, intensive after school small group reading instruction and individualized tutoring along with enrichment activities in coordination with the classroom curriculum. During the school year, Super Stars participants will attend the program daily from the time they are dismissed until 5:00 p.m. (4:30 for kindergartners). The primary program components consist of reading practice and support, homework assistance, and literacy extension and social enrichment activities. Program content, curriculum and reading selections are deliberately coordinated with Hoover teachers and are designed to complement the standard Open Court Reading Program curriculum and other content the students are encountering during school. In addition, the program is further enhanced by stimulating enrichment activities in science, art and sports. Parent/Guardian support is a key component of the Super Stars Program. Super Stars staff and volunteers work with parents to create a family-focused, family centered approach. The program plans to accomplish this objective through a number of initiatives including active case management, parental involvement in curriculum review, family workshops which emphasize cooperative learning in reading, math and science, and Saturday family field trips.
