McCullum Youth Court

(Program Offered in Schools)

Program Name: Youth Law Program

Program Description: After 32 hours of Basic Youth Law Training, youth choose an Attorney, Bailiff, or Clerk path for more advanced skill development as they participate in Court Night twice a month.  Law Clubs meet semi-monthly and are peer led, with adult Consults present.  Court Night is offered twice a month at Wiley Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.  Conflict resolution and mediation are part of the training.  This is an experiential approach to learning about the practice of law and issues of justice.  Street Law for Youth Courts is an essential element of the Novice Law Program for middle school students and some of the facilitators are seasoned high school students who serve as mentors and role models.

Special programming is offered during the summer for different cohorts of youth, from the Novice Law Summer Program for youth who are rising 9th graders to the Youth in Leadership advanced training for several days on a college campus.

Schools where program is currently offered: Youth currently involved in McCullum Youth Court come from a number of schools -- Castlemont, Fremont, McClymonds, Oakland High, Oakland Tech, and Skyline along with Merritt, Oasis, and Dewey.  However, all programming currently is offered on site at McCullum Youth Court's main offices in downtown Oakland.  Youth Court would like to locate its Youth Law Program at several middle and high schools, along with several community sites.  We are just beginning to forge relationships with Oakland middle schools.
